Swonti: ‘the festival of lights’

October is the best time to visit Nepal (because my birthday falls around this month ;)) because of the beautiful weather-autumn and of the greatest festivals-Dashain and Tihar.

Tihar (‘Swonti’ as per Nepal Bhasha) has been the most awaited festival for me always. The festival of lights that brighten up the darkest of the nights. Though celebrated for the 5 days, the latter three days are celebrated with more of enthusiasm. Starting off with Kaag Tihar (called Kwo Puja in Newari), the crows are worshiped on this day, to avert griefs and deaths in the home. On the second day, which is called Kukur Tihar (Kheecha Puja), dogs are worshiped. “Every Dog has its day” comes true this very day. Dogs are taken as the messenger of Yamraj (god of deaths) and also as the symbol of “Bhairab”.

The third day of this festival is Laxmi Puja. The goddess of wealth and prosperity is idolized offering delicacies. The houses and shops are adorned with flowers, oil lambs and colourful bulbs. One can have a spectacular view of the city this day.

The second last day of the festival is observed as ‘Mha Puja’ by the newar community. It is also the day of the beginning of new year (Nepal Sambat). All the members of the family gather together and sit in an hierarchical order. The decorated mandalas represent the individual himself and is worshiped for the good health of self. Then the family savor on the delicious feast.

The last day of the festival is Bhai Tika (called ‘Kija Puja’ in Nepal Bhasha) is a special day for brothers and sisters. Sisters worship for the good health and long life of their brothers.

With this we bid farewell to the beautiful festival of lights. Here are some of my clicks, enjoy ! 😉
